Blog Post: South Florida Technology Industry is Looking Good!

posted Monday, September 29, 2008 10:10 AM

Over the past two years, the Jobing.com South Florida Community Relations Team focused on the developing a better understanding of the employment trends of our respective communities – Miami, West Palm and Broward Counties. We had the privilege of working closely with chambers, professional associations, the educational and non-profit community, media, workforce board, training and human resources organizations to name a few. The cross-pollination of information and resources helped grow the Jobing.com Network in South Florida to over 160 partners strong.

Starting September, the Jobing.com Community Relations Team will take a closer look at each industry.  Our goal is to better understand the trends, needs and challenges of these industries and its respective workforce. We are looking forward to continue providing quality content through our blogs and career workshops as well as to develop and strengthen our relationship with the businesses in each of these industries.

One of my industries is technology. Here is a quick overview:
While it may seem that some of the industries in South Florida have come to a stop, the technology industry continues to grow. According to a recent article, Florida ’s technology exports grew by almost $1 billion last year. Florida was the third-largest tech exporter in the nation, with a $13.4 billion share of the U.S. ’s $214 billion total. We trailed only California , which led the country with $48.2 billion, and Texas , the nation’s second leading high-tech exporter, with $35.9 million.  High-tech exports supported hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs. In Florida , nearly 70,000 jobs were supported by tech exports. Other leading states included Texas (183,900 jobs), California (183,000 jobs), Arizona (36,400 jobs) and Oregon (33,900 jobs).

What does high-tech trade mean for Florida ?

  • $13.4 billion in high-tech exports (ranked third in U.S. )
  • Up $989 million in tech exports between 2006 and 2007
  • 30 percent of exports from Florida are tech exports (ranked 12th)
  • 69,900 jobs in Florida are supported by tech exports

Were are Florida ’s leading tech export destinations:

  • Brazil ($2 billion)
  • Venezuela ($1.3 billion)
  • Mexico ($1 billion)

Florida ’s leading tech export sectors:

  • Computers and peripheral equipment ($5.1 billion, ranked third in U.S. )
  • Communications equipment ($3.3 billion, ranked third)
  • Photonics ($529 million, ranked second)

How does it translates to local job seekers in the industry?

  • This is certainly a growing industry in South Florida and opportunities are plenty.
  • Consider learning a second language – if you don’t know on already. It will certainly add marketability to your job search.
  • Consider relocation.  They may be a need for technology professionals for work business development positions to expand any of the export market destinations.

As the South Florida Jobing.com Network continues to grow, I welcome the opportunity to work with new local professionals associations, technology chapters and educational programs in this industry.  Currenlty, Jobing.com technology partners include LISTA, South Florida Technology Alliance, iCoast, and IT Women, to name a few. If you are in the technology industry, I do look forward to hearing more your challenges, successes and tips to help other job seekers interested in exploring career in this field.  Employers, I also look forward to hearing form you regarding best practices, tips and challenges in growing your local pool of successful candidates!

     Have an awesome day!

Good info. I didn't know Texas was such an IT hotspot. I haven't had any trouble finding a job here in South Florida as I just moved from Michigan but I have had trouble getting companies to pay me!
