Blog Post: IT Employment Outlook for 2009

posted Sunday, October 12, 2008 9:05 AM

Last week, I met with the recruitment experts at Robert Half - Technology (RTH) division. They work with industry professionals and companies throughout the U.S. and publish an annual Salary Survey on the developments for professionals in this field. So what is in the future for those in technology careers? Here are a few facts from the 2009 Salary Survey:
  • IT Employment Outlook - the ongoing need for companies to use technology continues to fuel the demand for skilled IT professionals. Demand for professionals with skills in Microsoft .NET, SharePoint, Java and SQL Server development is high. Web 2.0 development skills is a huge advantage for candidates.
  • Most Wanted Positions - RHT conducted a survey among CIO's to determine the positions in high demand. Networking, database management and help desk/technical support positions are experiencing the highest growth. However, soft skills such as communication skills and leadership abilities are viewed as top competencies.
  • Regional Hiring Trends - Their salary survey also examined the regional hiring trends in the U.S.. According to the results, the fastest growing industries in the Southeast are financial services, government and healthcare. In terms of positions in demand within the IT industries, survey showed that web developed, help desk, desktop support analyst, and database administrators are at the top of the list.

Interestingly enough, educational institutions, media, and government entities use the Salary Guide to consult on compensation and hiring. Needless to say, it is a great tool to prepare for a successful career in technology.
