Blog Post: Developing Your 30 Second Commercial
posted Tuesday, January 20, 2009 5:17 PM
The 30 second commercial is a brief, verbal presentation of your employable assets. Within this relatively brief time frame, you will present your past accomplishments, employment background, immediate objectives and the projected benefits you offer a potential employer. Additionally, the 30 second commercial is used with your PIKs (People I Know) who may know you personally or socially, but not know you as a professional. The 30 Second Commercial will come in handy during telephone calls, meetings and interview conversations with prospective employers.
The 30 Second Commercial does not need to be limited to 30 seconds; it can extend to 45 seconds or more, yet should not exceed 60 seconds- EVER! Your objective is simple: to present a limited amount of positive, attention grabbing information in a brief amount of time. If the interviewer wants to know more about a specific aspect of your background, accomplishments, objectives or benefits, let him or her inquire about it. There may be times when a 30 second commercial will need to be delivered within a 10 second time frame. You’ll need to adapt to various situations. 30 Second Commercial A brief verbal presentation of your employable assets covering: Background- Briefly state your recent employment background and tenure, if not erratic. You may mention schooling, if degree is important. Accomplishments- Briefly state the accomplishments of your job career. Include quantitative details but do not give all the specifics. Make them want to ask for more information. Objective- Briefly state where you see yourself fitting in, i.e. positions, departments, industries or specific companies. Benefits- Briefly state how you imagine a prospective employer might benefit from having you as a team member.
