Blog Post: What is the Broward Business Leadership Network?
posted Friday, March 6, 2009 11:49 AM
I get asked this question a lot and the best way I know to answer it is - it is an organization that helps businesses to not be afraid to hire people with disabilities. It is to show that it is good business to hire people with disabilities and to change attitudes of employers to look at a person's abilities and not the disability. Looking at their abilities to do the job and as a result employers gain an employee that is of immeasurable value.
Studies have shown that hiring people with disabilities has resulted in increased business because people like to go to companies that hire people with disabilities and will often go the extra mile just to shop at the store that has hired people with disabilities. Walgreen's for example has opened a warehouse where they have over 40% of their staff with disabilities and they gained a reliable steady workforce that are no different than their regular employees. They've learned that placing people in the right job pays benefits. Persons with disabilities tend to have high loyalty to the company they are working for. Walgreen's appreciates this because they do not have to constantly hire and retain new employees. Job satisfaction is higher and attendance is almost perfect. The American with Disabilities Act has encouraged employers to consider persons with disabilities as potential employees, not only because of tax credits but because they make good employees.
