Blog Post: Time Management Tips for the Holidays
posted Wednesday, November 28, 2007 2:00 AM
We have officially entered the Holiday Season. This translates into many social events, the official office party and of course, gift exchange. I personally love the Holidays. However, as it turns out, every year it seems there is less and less time to complete my “to do” list. On top of everything, the increased number of social commitments makes it more challenging to manage our own times. I am not expert on time management. However, when I look at my calendar these days I feel like I definitely need a clone (or double). So, here are several tips to make the Holiday stress a bit more bearable.
Holiday Parties For the busy working professional, expect numerous invitations to networking events and Holiday parties from the associations, clubs, friends, family and of course, office. Many of these will fall on the same day. Be selective with your time and schedule. I strongly suggest to limit your Holiday events to one per day. This will ensure enough time to manage your daily responsibilities while at the same time making it on time to the event – stress free. If the packed social calendar forces you to consider more than one event per day, then consider limiting the stay at each event to one-hour. Needless to say, alcohol consumption should always be in moderation. Remember that this is a business event and performance will be monitored as well. The key issue to remember is that Holiday events are a perfect opportunity to relax, share and enjoy the company of others. Holiday gift exchange. When it comes to the gift exchange, there are lots of options. When shopping or selecting a Holiday gift for a co-worker or friend, chocolate is a wonderful thing! Now seriously, get the basic information (cost, type, recommendations) before heading to the stores. Another Holiday option is to select a gift for everyone on your team – it does not have to be expensive, perhaps treating your team to breakfast, getting everyone a small box of chocolates or Holiday cookies will certainly brighten their day and make them feel appreciated. RSVP Make sure to respond to every invitation. A simple “thank you for your invitation” means a lot to the organizer. Whether or not you plan to attend the event, the organizer will appreciate a prompt response. This will assist him/her in the planning of the event. Remember, it is OK to send regrets. Holiday Cards This is another awesome opportunity to catch up with old colleagues and, re-energize your network. A little token of appreciation goes a long way. Personally, I enjoy personalizing Holiday cards for friends and family. This is my opportunity to catch up and let them know they are very much appreciated. However, there may not be enough time to personalize hundreds of cards. Technology may be a second-best resource for the busy professional. Most popular card vendors already have e-cards available online. It is a great opportunity to keep in touch and brighten someone’s day. Needless to say, there is always the phone. Remember - a personalize note is the best way to make an impression.
