Profile: Navarro Discount Pharmacies

When José Navarro opened the first Navarro Discount Pharmacies in Havana, Cuba, in 1940, his goal was to create an inviting neighborhood store where the local community could gather and shop for all the products they wanted.

That first small neighborhood store became a staple to the local community, which led to the opening of a second store, and the two stores easily gained a reputation for being the best on the island.

In 1961, after the new Cuban government confiscated the local Navarro stores, José and his family moved to the United States and opened the first American Navarro Discount Pharmacies in the heart of Miami's Little Havana, a location that would allow the company to mix its existing cultural pride and diversity of products with a new and expanding market.

Navarro Discount Pharmacies is now the largest Hispanic-owned pharmacy chain in the United States and a member of the Chain Drug Consortium. Since the beginning, we have maintained deep roots in the South Florida community. We strive to take care of each other and our neighbors, and believe that by working together, we can create healthier communities for everyone.

We partnered with MBF Healthcare in 2007 in order to expand our presence in the market, and today we operate 33 stores in Miami-Dade County and employ more than 1,500 people. We hold a 17 percent market share in South Florida, with annual sales exceeding $325 million.

All of our stores employ a highly-qualified staff of licensed pharmacists and board certified pharmacy technicians. However, we are much more than your typical pharmacy, as we offer a bigger selection of items sought by the Hispanic community. Our customers can take advantage of our in-store and digital online photo processing, purchase a new cell phone plan, or shop for everything from elegant fragrances and electronics to groceries and household products.

As we look ahead to the future, we plan to continue expanding this year by opening new stores, creating a huge opportunity for jobs seekers in our local communities.
